About Us
We provide Bereavement, Hardship and Christmas grants and our Children’s Investment Trust helps young people who have suffered parental loss.
We provide support and activities for over 250 Registered Beneficiaries (Widows) who have lost their partner/spouse.
We provide a Spanish respite facility for rest and recuperation, following bereavement, periods of illness, stress, or to assist with longer term health conditions.
We aim to ensure that support to our Beneficiaries is delivered in a confidential, timely and sensitive manner.
We strive to ensure best use of charitable resources: between 80% and 100% of our annual regular giving income, received from Service employees, is paid out in grants, to assist those in greatest need.
HISTORY
Our Story
The charity was founded in 1923 by a group of Glasgow Firemen who had a desire to ensure that any fireman who lost his life would be comforted by the knowledge that his widow and child(ren) would be cared for and supported by the charity.
The founders of the charity decided to collect 6'd per wage to ensure that should a tragedgy occur and a fireman be killed that there would be enough funds available to look after the family who were left behind.
Thus was founded the oldest Fire & Rescue Service charity in the United Kingdom...The Glasgow Widows and Orphans Fund!
New Era, New Names
The Charity was to undergo several name changes throughout the next 90 years, the first of which took place in 1975 after the regionalisation of Scotland. Following this, the Charity would then be known as Strathclyde Widows and Orphan's Fund.
It was decided by the charity trustees in 198? to change the name yet again, this time to Strathclyde Family Support Trust, to reflect the encompassing nature of the charity and the inclusion of all fire service personnel, wholetime, retained, volunteer, support staff and retirees.
When in 200? Strathclyde Fire Brigade became Strathclyde Fire & Rescue the Charity's name once again changed to align itself to the new service. In 2013 when the single Scottish Fire & Rescue service was born the charity changed name for the final time to the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service Family Support Trust
